New Winterfest On Broadway Attraction Sure to “Pull” in a Big Crowd
For Immediate Release
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
GREEN BAY, Wis. — On Broadway Inc. (OBI) is proud to announce an exciting addition to the 9th annual Winterfest On Broadway, being held on Saturday, January 28; The Tri-State Alaskan Malamute Club (TSAMC) Dog Pull Competition. The competition will be located on East Hubbard Street. Weigh-in starts at 8:30am and the competition starts at 11:00am.
Weight pulling is a sport for working breed dogs, such as Alaskan Malamutes, American Bulldogs, and American Pit Bull Terriers, which compete by pulling a weighted load 16 feet in 45 seconds or less. The dog that pulls the most weight in the shortest time amongst its weight class takes first place. There is more to the sport than the might and muscle that appears on the surface.
“The success in the event is really the communication between the dog and the handler,” says Marty Stringfield, the TSAMC Event Liaison. “It takes about 95% brain and 5% muscle to be successful. A scrawny, little dog with heart and determination can out-pull a big, muscular dog because it’s all about the connection between the dog and the handler.”
Though there is a cash prize, which typically covers the cost of training and traveling to the event, the reward for the handler is bonding with his or her working dog. The reward for the dog is the pride it feels by pleasing its master.
Weight pulling evolved from the days of freighting, when dogs were used to transport cargo cross-4country. Freighting was highly used during the North American gold rushes, but tapered off in the 1920s after the advent of air mail. The modern day version serves as an outlet for working dogs to exert their energy.
Winterfest On Broadway, held in Downtown Green Bay’s historic Broadway District, is a one-day festival featuring activities, games, entertainment, food, and outdoor excitement including hayrides, an ice carving competition, kites in Leicht Park, indoor and outdoor games and more. Proceeds from the event benefit the mission of OBI.
